The height follows your picture. Sizes in brackets are the finished size on 14 count aida for a square design.

Fewer colours means fewer threads to buy and a chart that is quicker to read. Eight is a good place to start.

On by default. A plain light background becomes bare fabric instead of hundreds of white stitches, which is how a stitcher would work it anyway.

How it works

  1. Pick a picture with clear shapes. Logos, silhouettes, simple drawings and photos with a plain background all chart well.
  2. Choose how wide the chart should be in squares and how many colours it may use. Both change how long the project takes.
  3. Download the PDF. It carries the chart, the colour key with a thread code per colour, and the finished size.

How many colours should a bead or stitch pattern use?

For beads, six to ten colours is usually right: a pegboard design is small and extra colours turn into single beads nobody notices. For cross stitch, ten to sixteen gives you shading without endless thread changes. Fewer colours read better from across a room and cost less to buy.
